Shaped foundation shrubs in fresh black mulch on a Southern New Hampshire home

What’s included

  • Hedge shaping and height control
  • Foundation shrub pruning
  • Deadwood and crossing-branch removal
  • Clearance cut back from siding and walkways
  • All clippings removed

Timing matters more than technique with most New England shrubs. Spring-flowering plants like lilac and forsythia set buds the previous year, so cutting them in early spring removes the flowers. We prune those right after bloom instead.

Foundation plantings also need clearance from siding. Shrubs pressed against a house trap moisture and invite carpenter ants. Every trim opens that gap back up.

Shrub Trimming questions

How often should shrubs be trimmed?
Most foundation shrubs and hedges need one to two trims a year. Fast growers like burning bush and privet do best with two.
Will trimming hurt my flowering shrubs?
Not when it is timed correctly. We prune spring bloomers right after they flower and summer bloomers in late winter so you never lose a season of blooms.
Do you remove the clippings?
Always. Clippings and deadwood leave with the crew the same day.
